Provenance: The Artist’s Estate

The date and purpose of this design is unknown and not recorded in the Boston Public Library list of Leighton woodcuts. It might well have been intended as an tail piece though it was possibly never editioned.

In the history of wood engraving Clare Leighton is acknowledged to be one the greatest exponents of this art. Her Farmers Year, 1933, is one of the most celebrated illustrated books of its period and her New England Industries for Wedgwood, produced in the late 1940s after she had emigrated to America, are a design classic.
